GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE OCEAN

Ocean

71% - 72% of Earth is covered by oceans.

Pacific coast shrinking about 1 inch a year.

67% of land in N. Hemisphere

Ocean currents are HEAT MOVERS

Ocean Currents

Warm

Cold

Oceans are regulators

Primary source of H2O

Largest reservoir (well) of Carbon

Regulates our climate

Helps regulates food source

Mineral source

Transportation

EARTH’S INTERIOR

Center of Earth

Cores (2)

1. Inner Core

Solid

Iron

Nickel

Specific Gravity (17 g/cm3)

Directly related t o the density of a substance

2. Outer Core

Liquid

Specific Gravity (12g/cm3)

Magnetic field is in outer core

AU AL

Earth’s interior is arranged by density.

68% of Earth’s interior

3 Zones

1. Mesosphere

Solid

Specific Gravity (5g/cm3)

2. Asthenosphere

Specific Gravity (4g/cm3)

Plastic-like

Can be molded (tar-like)

Topography

H20 Depth

200-300 Feet deep off the coast

Continent gradually go down hill into the ocean.

Georgia Banks

Grand Banks

North America is moving West into the Pacific Ocean 1 inch per year. Pacific Ocean is going to be diminished and the Atlantic Ocean will increase in size. North America will be neighbors of Japan in Million/s of years from now.
